S1 is part of NEXTDC’s national network of world-class carrier and vendor neutral colocation data centres, located in Macquarie Park, NSW. It provides 5,600 m2of data hall space, which translates to space for 2800 racks supplied by an IT load of 11.5MW when completely fitted-out. Providing a purpose-built environment for clients to house their IT infrastructure and network via the in-house ‘ecosystem’ of IT service providers, S1 has achieved the Uptime Institute’s (UTI) industry-benchmark Tier III certification for design and facility, utilising a minimum N+1 redundancy on all critical systems to provide 100% availability.

ECS were engaged by NEXTDC in a number of construction and fit-out stages for commissioning verification, overseeing aspects of the services commissioning and carrying out sample witness testing of various systems: mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, security and fire detection and suppression. ECS were also engaged to both write the Integrated System Test (IST) scripts and to manage the running and reporting of the final ISTs, prior to S1 achieving UTI certification.

Some of the main challenges involved with projects of this size are the shortened timeframe for delivery. Also, in the later stages the expansion of existing infrastructure without affecting live areas was critical to the project’s success. This led to a concentrated commissioning timeframe where careful attention to detail was required to ensure all items had been fully tested, commissioned and comprehensively documented.

In addition, this site is one of the first in APAC to utilise Piller’s advanced DRUPS and Iso-Parallel Bus electrical distribution system, which ensures power availability and distribution efficiency, and their assessment by ECS required a high level of engineering expertise.
